Abashiri Station
JR Abashiri Station is the terminal station for express trains from Sapporo and Asahikawa and the land gateway to Okhotsk tourism. Buses depart from in front of the station for tourist attractions such as Mt Tento and Memanbetsu Airport, and for a limited period of time, buses to Shiretoko are also available. Unlike other stations, the wooden station name sign at the entrance of Abashiri Station is written vertically, but there is an anecdote that the name was written vertically because the stationmaster wanted Abashiri Prison inmates who had served their sentences to “live a straight life without going sideways”.
