  • Abashiri City Folk Museum

    This museum explores Abashiri’s rich ‘nature’ and ‘history’ from ancient times to the present day through displays and explanations. The building was completed in 1936 and is one of the oldest museums in Hokkaido, and is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.

  • Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples

    This museum introduces the cultures of a wide range of northern peoples, from the Inuit of Greenland in the east to the Sami of Scandinavia in the west, and the Okhotsk culture of Hokkaido.

  • Michi no Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri

    Located in the centre of Abashiri City, this roadside station overlooks the Sea of Okhotsk and is a busy departure and arrival point for the drift ice sightseeing boat ‘Aurora’ in winter. Inside the building there are souvenir shops, restaurants and a tourist information centre, where you can find information on sightseeing in the area.

  • HOKUTEN NO OKA Lake Abashiri Tsuruga Resort

    Operated by the Hokkaido Tsuruga Group, this is one of Abashiri’s leading hot spring resorts, located high up on the shores of Lake Abashiri. A total of 80 rooms, including the special floor “Ko-no-za” with an open-air bath and private garden in every room.

    In addition to a large hot spring bath and open-air bath, there is also a footbath. A wide variety of meals are served, including the popular buffet “Okhotsk Buffet”, creative French cuisine and creative Japanese cuisine.

  • Hotel Abashirikoso

    Established in 1948, this long-established onsen ryokan is located on the shores of Lake Abashiri. The hotel is equipped with a natural hot spring bath and an open-air bath, and many of the rooms, mainly Japanese-style, have a beautiful view of Lake Abashiri. The well-established Japanese Kaiseki cuisine is also popular.

  • Abashiri Central Hotel

    Located in the centre of Abashiri City, this hotel is a popular base for both business and sightseeing. It is about a 3-minute walk from Abashiri Bus Terminal and a 10-minute walk from Michi no Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri, where the drift ice sightseeing ship Orola arrives and departs. Abashiri’s downtown area is located near the hotel, and there is no shortage of dining options.

  • Abashiri City Museum of Art

    Abashiri City Museum of Art will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022. It is an Okhotsk art museum rooted in the local climate and houses works by Abashiri-born painter Kaichi Ikushi, who was active in the Independent Art Association, as well as works by artists associated with Abashiri and those who used Okhotsk as their subject matter.

  • Abashiri Station

    JR Abashiri Station is the terminal station for express trains from Sapporo and Asahikawa and the land gateway to Okhotsk tourism. Buses depart from in front of the station for tourist attractions such as Mt Tento and Memanbetsu Airport, and for a limited period of time, buses to Shiretoko are also available. Unlike other stations, the wooden station name sign at the entrance of Abashiri Station is written vertically, but there is an anecdote that the name was written vertically because the stationmaster wanted Abashiri Prison inmates who had served their sentences to “live a straight life without going sideways”.

  • Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum

  • Moyoro Shell Mound Museum

    The Moyoro Shell Mound is an archaeological site located at the mouth of the Abashiri River, which flows into the Sea of Okhotsk. The museum exhibits and introduces the lives of people from the past, as revealed through excavations showing ‘dwellings’, ‘tombs’ and ‘shell mounds’.

  • Hana Tento Flower Park

    Hana Tento is a flower garden with flowers planted by hand by Abashiri residents. From July to October, approximately 42,000 flowers bloom in an area of 3.5 hectares. Closed in winter.

  • Abashiri Prison

    Abashiri Prison became nationally famous with the film series Abashiri Bangaichi starring Ken Takakura. Visitors are only allowed to visit the red-brick gate and the prison work product exhibition area. The Abashiri Prison Museum, where the former Abashiri Prison has been preserved, is a five-minute drive from the current prison and can be visited.

  • Cafe & Cake Fuka

    A popular sweet shop located at the foot of Mount Tento in Abashiri. The shop offers a range of carefully selected products, including cakes made from local Hokkaido ingredients and homemade puddings made from locally produced milk that has been pasteurised. In summer, the shop has an outdoor eat-in area surrounded by white birches.

  • Abashiri Prison Museum

    Japan’s only prison museum, built in the former Abashiri Prison, with the actual cells, the prison chapel and the government building relocated to the site. The large premises are dotted with buildings of high historical value, including eight important cultural properties and six registered tangible cultural properties.

    The ‘Shaibo and Central Watchtower’, with its rows of rooms where prisoners lived, is one of the important cultural properties. The five cells radiate out from the central guardhouse so that all corridors can be seen. It is the world’s oldest wooden cell building of this shape, and the only one still existing in Japan. It is also one of the largest, with a total of 226 cells, including solitary and shared cells. Some of the cells are actually open to visitors, allowing them to experience the rooms where prisoners actually spent their time.

  • Abashiri Bus Terminal

    Bus terminal with airport buses to Memanbetsu Airport, inter-city buses to Sapporo and New Chitose Airport, buses to Shiretoko (limited period) and buses to various parts of the city. It is within walking distance of the city centre, where restaurants and other shops are located, as well as the ‘Michi no Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri’, where drift ice sightseeing boats depart and arrive.

  • Cape Notoro

    A cape located on the east side of Lake Notoro. Located on a cliff jutting out into the Sea of Okhotsk, it commands a view of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Shiretoko mountain range in the distance to the east. A beautiful green meadow spreads out around the lighthouse standing at the head of the cape, where visitors can enjoy a peaceful grazing scene.

  • Hama-Koshimizu Station

  • Omagari Lakeside Park

  • Koshimizu Tourism Association Visitor Center

    Located in Abashiri Banya, not far from Michi no Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri, is Robatayaki Akari. Here you can enjoy the seafood of Okhotsk, such as robatayaki, kamameshi and sashimi, while enjoying a view of Abashiri’s harbour. With a capacity of 70-80 people, it can also be used by groups.

  • Lake Notoro Glasswort community (Sango-so)
